Spring Training Tidbits

*In Kissimmee, facing the Astros, Charlie Manuel was run over by a tricycle during a mid-inning race. He had this to say about the harrowing experience- "That three-wheeler got me. I saw him, man. I thought, 'He better get over.' He got me. He ran over me with a three-wheeler. Dubee was supposed to stop him there, isn't he? He's supposed to save me. He let me get run over. He said, 'Go ahead, hit him.' He ran over my toes, too, man."

*Jimmy Rollins is batting .357 in the World Baseball Classic (5-14 with 1 DBL and 1 SB).  Team USA takes on Team Puerto Rico in Round 2 tonight.

*Domonic Brown leads all players in runs scored this spring with 15.  He's also tied for 2nd in hits with 16, tied for 9th in walks with 6, 12th in batting average at .432, and 9th in OPS at 1.252.  Not too shabby.

*Aside from Cole Hamels implosion against Team Dominican Republic, which doesn't count against Spring Training stats, he's be outstanding with a 0.90 ERA and 0.70 WHIP.

*Rich Dubee said the bullpen competition begins today.  Papelbon, Bastardo, Adams, and Durbin are the only guarantees.  Stutes, De Fratus, Horst, Diekman, Aumont, and Valdes are all vying for the final 3 spots.

Halladay got shelled today. 7 R in 2.2 IP.

His spring hasn't been very good so far. Based on the way he ended last season, it is a cause for a bit of concern.

Of the pitchers who will/may be on the opening day roster, all but Hamels, Adams, and Aumont have ERAs above 5. At least one silver lining is those three have ERAs below 1.

I take that back, Bastardo is also sub-five.

Both Dubee and Manuel are actually concerned with Halladay's outing.

If he's not close to Halladay of old, and more like Halladay of last year, then this season is really F'D in the A.

Better than the Red Sox.

So what?!

Yeah Halladay's done.
He should have had it taken care of Last year in spring training, but he didn't he has been trying to exercise his way though it for a year now. It's not working. Clearly something is wrong that he can't fix with work ethic.

I actually believe this team is a wild card team, and i believe they are better than the Braves. However without a healthy Roy Halladay they are a 3rd place team and not a wild card team.

Halladay was sitting at 84-85 mph yesterday. He walked 4, hit a batter, and threw a wild pitch. Doc doesn't do that when healthy. Something is wrong.

Can someone please explain to me why Zach Miner pitches in every spring training game?
The dude sucks. He has zero chance of making this team.

Cliff Lee now pitching like shit. This staff is in trouble. Spring training does start to matter when almost everyone on the staff is pitching poorly.

Solid defense for the Phils, only 5 errors so far in the game.

This spring kind of reminds me of the Bad News Bears, if the film ended an hour earlier.

Sup with NELSON FRIGGIN FIGUEROA knocking out team USA from the World Baseball Classic. I am in shock and awe.

J-Roll did Philadelphia proud throughout the WBC.

I thought Nelson Figueroa was born in NY...maybe I'm wrong.

Baseball Reference and Wikipedia say he was indeed born in NYC but is of Puerto Rican decent and so played for them in the WBC. I guess because Puerto Rico is part of this country, he was allowed to be part of the heritage despite not being born there.
